Saturday April 30th

Werder Bremen 3 Arminia Bielefeld 0

Werder Bremen won convincingly at home against Arminia Bielefeld by a score of 3-0.  Goals from Ludovic Magnin, Tim Borowski and Miroslav Klose gave Werder a much needed three points.  Werder is now in 4th place with 53 points, ahead of Hertha Berlin on goal differential, and four points back of second place.

Bayern Munich clinched the title today after a 0-4 win in Kaiserslautern.  With the Championship out of the way, the battle for Europe should prove to be interesting.  "We needed three points today and now we find ourselves in the middle of a fight for UEFA Cup.  We also have a chance to sneak up on a couple of teams and possibly qualify for the Champions League" says Paul Stalteri.  Stalteri played rightback for 90 minutes.

Friday April 29th

Werder Bremen vs. Arminia Bielefeld Preview

Werder Bremen host Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday April 30th in the Weser Stadium.  After sustaining two home losses in a row, the defending German Champions look to take three points at home this weekend and secure a spot in Europe. 

Bielefeld coach Uwe Rapolder has had to deal with the news of many of his players intended departure for next season.  Already contracted to other teams are Ervin Skela (Kaiserslautern), Patrick Owomoyela (Bremen), Benjamin Lense (Nurnberg), and Delron Buckley (Dortmund).  With 39 points, Bielefeld appear to be free of the threat of relegation.  Rapolder will be without Markus Schuler, Langkamp and Daniel Bogusz on Saturday.

Werder will be without Captain Frank Baumann, Ümit Davala, and Krisztian Lisztes due to injury.  Thomas Schaaf has nominated the following 17-man squad:  Reinke, Borel, Magnin, Schulz, Pasanen, Fahrenhorst, Ismaël, Stalteri, Ernst, Micoud, Borowski, Jensen, Valdez, Zidan, Klose, Klasnic, Hunt.

 

Sunday April 24th

Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2 Werder Bremen 1

Werder Bremen were unable to capture three points in the Bay Arena on Sunday April 24th.  A 3rd minute goal from Krzynowek and an additional goal from Babic in the 38th minute put Leverkusen ahead 2-0.  Miroslav Klose scored a header just a minute after Leverkusen's second goal to bring Werder within one.

Werder's second half performance was much more impressive than the first half, however they were unable to equalize.   

The win proved to be a very important three points for Leverkusen as they are now within one point of reaching a place in Europe.  Werder are in 5th place with 50 points, ahead of 6th place Hamburg on goal differential. 

Paul Stalteri started the match at leftback and switched to rightback in the second half before being substituted in the 65th minute for Aaron Hunt.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen Werder Bremen Preview

Werder Bremen are away to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bay Arena on Sunday April 24th.

With Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 in the German Cup final, 6th place will now earn qualification for Europe.  Following the games on Saturday afternoon, Werder have dropped to 5th place and will have a lot of pressure from 7th place Leverkusen as they look to gain the last berth into Europe.

Leverkusen will be without Jens Nowotny, Robson Ponte, and Franca due to injury, and Carsten Ramelow and Diego Placente due to suspension.

Werder Bremen have not announced their 18-man squad for the game and it is not yet known which players are available.  Captain Frank Baumann is the only certain absentee.

Tuesday April 19th

German Cup semi-final - FC Schalke 04 7  Werder Bremen 6

Schalke are in the final of the German Cup after a dramatic semi-final win against Werder Bremen.  After regulation time, the two teams were tied 1-1.  Early into extra time, Tim Borowski gave Werder a short lived lead which was taken away just minutes later by ex-Werder player Ailton. 

After playing 120 minutes the game remained tied at 2-2 and went to a penalty shoot-out.  After the first five shots, the game was still tied at 5-5, and it took an additional two penalty shots to decide the game.  Ex-Werder goalkeeper Frank Rost saved penalty shots from Stalteri, Borowski and Ernst and went on to score the final penalty shot to win the game.

Monday April 18th

Werder Bremen will face FC Schalke 04 in the Arena auf Schalke on April 19th in the semi-final of the German Cup.  In the other semi-final Arminia Bielefeld will play at home to FC Bayern Munich on April 20th.  The final will be held in Berlin on May 28th. 

Werder are once again without striker Miroslav Klose (knee) and Frank Baumann (ankle).  Coach Thomas Schaaf has selected the following 18-man squad for the match:  Reinke, Borel, Magnin, Schulz, Stalteri, Ismaël, Pasanen, Fahrenhorst, Ernst, Micoud, Jensen, Lisztes, Hunt, Zidan, Valdez, Klasnic, Davala, Borowski.

Saturday April 16th

Werder Bremen 0 Hertha BSC Berlin 1

After a successful home record during the first half of the season, Werder Bremen have lost their second home game in a row.  Hertha went ahead in the 30th minute when striker Marcelinho found his way past Werder's defence.

Werder played well, but were unable to finish one of their many opportunities.  Coach Thomas Schaaf ended the match with a very offensive squad, taking off two defensive players and bringing in young striker Aaron Hunt and Mohammad Zidan.  Unfortunately, the team was unable to get the equalizer. 

Werder remain in fourth place, tied with Hertha, but ahead due to a goal differential. 

Werder are away to Schalke 04 in the German Cup semi-final on Tuesday April 19th. 

Paul Stalteri played 90 minutes.

Friday April 15th

Werder Bremen vs. Hertha BSC Berlin Preview

Werder Bremen host Hertha Berlin on Saturday April 16th in the Weser Stadium.  Hertha are currently three points back of Werder with 47 points and a win will bring them level in 4th place.  Both teams have a lot to gain from a win.  A win for Werder will help bring them back into contention for 3rd place.

It appears as if Hertha coach Falko Goetz will have a fully fit squad for the match.

Saturday April 9th

Hamburg SV 1 Werder Bremen 2

Werder Bremen are secure in 4th place after a win in Hamburg.  The defending German Champions came away from the North Derby victorious and helped increase their chances of finishing in a European position. 

Striker Miroslav Klose capitalized on an early defensive error and put Werder in the lead after only 8 minutes of play.  Hamburg equalized in the second half, but Werder striker Ivan Klasnic responded with class as he hit the winner in the 70th minute.

It has been a successful year for Werder against their Northern rivals.  They tied at home in the first half of the year and were able to win away in Hamburg today.   

Paul Stalteri played rightback for 90 minutes.

Friday April 8th

Hamburg SV vs. Werder Bremen Preview

Werder Bremen will travel to Hamburg without injured Captain Frank Baumann and suspended Valerin Ismaël.  The North Derby match is expected to draw a record 6,000 Werder fans in the Hamburg AOL Arena. 

Hamburg coach Thomas Doll also has to do without four key players.  Emile Mpenza (suspension), Sergej Barbarez (suspension), Khalid Boulahrouz (injury), and Benjamin Lauth (injury) will all be unavailable for the North Derby. 

Both teams will be looking to secure a spot in Europe.  Werder are currently in 4th place with 47 points, while Hamburg is in 6th place three points back.

Saturday April 2nd

Werder Bremen 1 VfB Stuttgart 2

VfB Stuttgart are now four points clear in third place after a win in Bremen.  The defending German Champions were unable to take three points away from the home match and are now four points out of a qualification position for the Champions League. 

Just minutes after Werder went down 0:1, striker Ivan Klasnic scored the lone goal for the home team to equalize in the 52nd minute.  Werder went down to 10 men in the 84th minute when Valerin Ismaël picked up his second yellow card of the game.  The winning goal for Stuttgart came in the 87th minute when Tiffert scored off of a rebound. 

Paul Stalteri played 90 minutes.

Friday April 1st

Werder Bremen vs. VfB Stuttgart Preview

The battle for third place begins on Saturday April 2nd when Stuttgart visits the Weser Stadium in Bremen.  Werder are currently in fourth place and will overtake Stuttgart with a win on Saturday, conversely a loss will send the defending German Champions four points out of third place.  The team who finishes in third place will have the opportunity to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Werder are without Petri Pasanen and Ümit Davala who have both been sidelined with non-football related illnesses.  The 18-man squad selected by Thomas Schaaf consists of: Reinke, Walke, Borowski, Micoud, Ernst, Baumann, Ismaël, Fahrenhorst, Stalteri, Schulz, Magnin, Klasnic, Klose, Hunt, Jensen, Zidan, Lisztes, Valdez.
