Werder
Bremen suffered a disappointing 0-3 loss at home in their first-leg game to
Lyon. Even after controlling a majority of the game and having many goal
scoring opportunities, Werder were unable to find the back of the net.
Lyon capitalized on the few chances that they had to seal the victory.
Sylvain Wiltord scored on a
counter-attack in the 9th minute. The second goal from Mahamadou Diarra
came in the 77th minute and Juninho scored off a free-kick just minutes later.
Even before the whiste, the
match did not get off to a great start for Werder. Thomas Schaaf was
forced to make an early change to his team when striker Ivan Klasnic picked up
an injury in the warm-up.
The second-leg will be played
on Tuesday March 8th in Lyon. Werder Bremen will have to give one of their
top performances of the year if they wish to have a chance to advance to the
next round.
Paul Stalteri played
rightback for 90 minutes.
