Sunday August 29th

Werder Bremen lost at home to Wolfsburg in Bundesliga action on Sunday August 29th.  Klose scored the lone goal for Bremen in the 71st minute.  Paul Stalteri did not play in the match.  The Bundesliga will now have a two week international break and Werder Bremen's next match will be away to Mönchengladbach on September 11th. 

Canadian Julian De Guzman played 90 minutes for Hannover in their 1-1 away draw with Dortmund.

Paul Stalteri called into the National Team

Canada begins a two game series in World Cup Qualifying in Edmonton this week.  Canada will face Honduras in Edmonton on September 4th at 7:00 pm (local time) and Costa Rica in San Jose at 8:oo pm (local time) on September 8th.

"We have one goal against Honduras and that is to get three points from this match, anything else will put our World Cup Qualifying campaign in doubt.  We need to regroup and establish ourselves as a team." 

 

Friday August 27th

Kevin McKenna has suffered another setback.  He will definitely not be available for the next two World Cup Qualifying matches.  On Wednesday September 1st he will be having a scan to determine whether orthoscopic surgery will be required on his knee.

Tuesday August 24th

Kevin McKenna appears to be 2 or 3 days away from being able to train with his club team Hearts.  He is optimistic that he will be able to join the National Team against Honduras in Edmonton, however he cannot confirm that he will be fully fit.  

 

Monday August 23rd Werder Bremen lost in a penalty shootout with Spanish side Real Murcia.  At the end of regulation time, the score was tied at 2 - 2. 

Paul Stalteri played the second half and scored his penalty shot in the shootout. 

All of the goals came in the second half, 0:1 Charisteas (46.), 1:1 Karanka (51.), 1:2 Klose (54.), 2:2 Munteanu (70.).  7,900 fans attended the match

 

Monday August 23rd

Defending German Cup winners Werder Bremen will face Bayer Leverkusen in the second round of the German Cup.  It is a rather unlucky draw, as one of the two top teams in the league will be eliminated at such an early stage of the competition.  The game will take place on September 21st. or 22nd in the Bremen Weserstadion.

The team left for Spain this morning as Werder Bremen take on Spanish second division side Real Murcia at 9:30 pm tonight.  Werders goalkeeper, Andreas Reinke left Murcia on a free transfer last season at which time Werder and Murcia decided to mark the deal with a friendly match.

Saturday August 21st

SSV Jahn Regensburg 0 Werder Bremen 2

Johan Micoud scored Werder Bremen's first goal in the 62nd minute while Klasnic sealed the win in injury time.  Werder Bremen will now advance to the second round of the German Cup.

Paul Stalteri played rightback for 90 minutes.

 

Friday August 20th

Paul Stalteri arrived in Bremen this morning and left with the team later this afternoon on a flight to Munich in preparation for their German cup game on Saturday August 21st at 3pm.  They will face 3rd division (Regionalliga) club SSV Jahn Regensburg in the first round of the German cup.

Before leaving for Munich Paul Stalteri was asked about Canada's loss to Guatemala.  "It was definitely a disappointing loss, but we will learn from our mistakes and move forward.  We were missing some key players, but that is no excuse.  We have five games to play and we need to put this game behind us."

 

Wednesday August 18th

Canada 0 Guatemala 2

Paul Stalteri earned his 49th cap today in Canada's loss against Guatemala. The Guatemala striker Ruiz opened the scoring in the 8th minute. He would later add on to the score in the 55th minute for a final score of 0-2. 

 

Saturday August 14th

Hansa Rostock 0 Werder Bremen 4

For the first time in two years Paul Stalteri was not in the starting 11.   He was substituted into the game in the 85th minute for Magnin.  Klasnic scored two goals while Micoud and Pasanen scored one a piece.

 

Friday August 13th

Paul Stalteri will join the Canadian National Team on Sunday as they prepare to play Guatemala in World Cup Qualifying.  Canada faces off against Guatemala at 7pm at Swanguard Stadium in Vancouver, B.C.  

The game will be televised live on CTV Sportsnet at 7pm PT / 10pm ET. 

Werder Bremen will have 13 players on international duty this week.  (Baumann, Ernst, Klose, Borowski, Fahrenhorst, Charisteas, Klasnic, Magnin, Pasanen, Lageblom, Stalteri, Schulz and Walke)

Saturday August 7th

After a delayed start of 66 minutes, Werder Bremen won their home opener against Schalke 04 by a score of 1-0.  The delay was a result of a power shortage.

After being substituted for Klose in the 74th minute, Valdez scored Bremen’s lone goal in the 83rd minute.  Paul Stalteri played leftback and was substituted in the 65th minute for Magnin.

The season opener had a special twist for Werder Bremen fans.  It was a chance to see ex-Werder Bremen players Miladen Krstajic and Ailton back in Bremen.  "It was obviously difficult to think about playing against players that I have played with for the past four years, but in the end it was just another game" says Paul Stalteri. 

It was not long ago that Paul Stalteri along with former teammates Ailton and Miladen Krstajic were celebrating the double together. 

"It is a new season for all of us and we are good enough friends to remember the good times we had together while remaining competitive on the field.  I wish them all the best at their new club"

 

Monday August 2nd

Bayern Munich beat Werder Bremen 3-2 in the final of the League Cup.

Werder Bremen were down 3-0 after 65 minute.  Klasnic scored in the 68th mminue, and Ismael scored a penalty in the 74th minute to make it 3-2.

Paul Stalteri and Frank Baumann were both substituted in the 45th minute.

On a more positive note.  Johan Micoud has agreed to a new deal with Werder Bremen which runs until 2007.

 

Saturday July 31st

Today was fan day in Bremen.  The team spent the day signing autographs for all those that came.  Attendance was estimated at 20,000.

Thursday July 29th

Werder Bremen beat VfB Stuttgart 2-0.  Klasnic and Valdez scored for Bremen. 

Paul Stalteri played leftback for 90 minutes.
